Lung Cancer Awareness, Prevention, & Treatment Options

The American Lung Association notes lung cancer as the leading cancer killer among men and women. Cancer of the lung(s) is caused by abnormal cellular proliferation. The rapid growth of cancerous cells can form tumors and metastasize (spread) to other organs in the body. Treatment options vary depending on the stage of cancer and the individual’s health needs. Early screening and health promotion are imperative for lung cancer control and prevention. The Mayo Clinic also comments on risk factors leading to lung cancer stating, “The risk of lung cancer increases with the length of time and number of cigarettes you've smoked. If you quit smoking, even after smoking for many years, you can significantly reduce your chances of developing lung cancer.”

Lung Cancer Prevention Strategies Outlined by the Mayo Clinic:

1. Don’t smoke

2. Stop smoking if you are currently smoking

3. Avoid secondhand smoke

4. Test your home for radon

5. Avoid carcinogens at work

6. Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables

7. Exercise regularly

Treatment & Care Options for Individuals With Lung Cancer:

1. Surgery- Preferred treatment option for clients with early stages of lung cancer. A lobe portion, the lobe, or the entire lung may be removed surgically. Cryosurgery can also be done to destroy localized cancerous tumors.

2. Chemotherapy- A systemic treatment that enters the bloodstream killing cancerous cells. WebMD comments, “Chemotherapy is the most effective treatment for small cell lung cancer.” Chemotherapy is also used in treating more advanced stages of cancer.

3. Radiation- The use of high energy X-rays to shrink tumors and destroy cancerous cells. Radiation is often done in combination with chemotherapy, but can also be done alone.

4. Pain Management- Pain can result from cancer or from cancer treatments. Pain management should begin early in the plan of care for optimal results. Pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin) can aid in alleviating mild to moderate pain. For moderate to severe pain the physician may order narcotics like codeine, morphine, and oxycodone.

Lung cancer treatment options vary depending on the stage of cancer and the patient’s health status. It’s important for individuals with lung cancer to acquire adequate healthcare and support for optimal wellbeing. Discuss with your physician treatment options most suitable for your health needs.
